First Race of the Season

Last Saturday, January 30th, the womens team went down to Lake Lanier for their first competition of the season, Lanier Heartburn Sprints. In the open weight category, Samantha Smelly and Meg Schroeder came in first and third . Caitlin Chapin and Carlee Schmidt came in first and third, respectively, in the light weight race, and to finish the day off Kris Batol came in third in the mens coxswain event. Caitlin Teague and Cassie Merrigan both competed in their first 2k race ever in the novice event. Both girls broke 8:10 and made a statement, “they are to be feared.” While Lanier is only a small event, it has pumped up the team for the rest of the season; we now have our sights set on Atlanta Indoor Sprints and even Dad Vails.

Team Takes First Strokes of the Spring Season

The team got back on the water this weekend after a winter of erging and conditioning. Both the men’s and women’s squads are ready to jump into training for the spring sprint season.

The women headed down to Jacksonville, FL for the weekend where they were fortunate to row out of the Jacksonville Episcopal High School boathouse. The warmer Florida weather provided a great environment for getting back on the water seven times in three days and all the women appreciated the opportunity to get work done on the water rather than on the erg. Special thanks to GT Coach Nick Marino, JEHS Coach Peterson and all the JEHS families who hosted and fed the team for making the weekend a huge success.

The Tech Men’s Squad’s first practice was a great scrimmage with UVA at Lake Lanier. Despite not having been on the water for 5 weeks, both Novice and Varsity held constant contact on all of the pieces and beat many of the UVA 8s. The scrimmage was a great way to kick off the season and transition from winter training to the competitive spring season.

This Saturday GT Crew traveled to Chattanooga, TN for the Chattanooga Head Race where the team competed against other university programs from around the south including Emory, UGA, UT-Chattanooga, and D1 Women’s Varsity Programs from Alabama and Tennessee.

The team had a strong showing with the varsity men’s collegiate 8’s taking gold and silver and the women’s collegiate 8 beating out 2 D1 varsity boats to take 5th. The day ended with the team being awarded the Team Points Trophy and was a great start to the fall racing season.

Become a National Champion. No Experience Necessary.

ATHLETES WANTED.

GT Crew is an intercollegiate, co-ed team that races throughout the Southeast and across the country against teams like Clemson, Purdue, and UGA. The student-run team was officially founded in 1986 and is the largest sports club on campus with approximately 70 athletes. We are also one of the most successful organizations at Georgia Tech, consistently earning medals at the Dad Vail national championship regatta for more than 13 years in a row.

While many of our rowers were competitive high-school athletes, more than 90 percent of our team had no previous rowing experience prior to joining GT Crew. As long as you have the desire to improve your physical fitness, there can be a place for you on crew. We’re open to all sorts of athletes — heavyweight, lightweight, tall, short, men and women. We are also always looking for coxswains to steer and motivate boats on the water.
