1.10.05 - Pictures are up from the Head of the Hooch as well as some novice photos from the Head of the Lanier. The last fall regatta is this Saturday in Augusta, Georgia - the Head of the South. See a map of the HOTS course. Personally, the Head of the South is my favorite because nobody takes care of you like the Augusta families do, NO ONE.

Thanks to all alumni, friends and family that came to the Alumni picnic. We christened 3 fours - the Wintech (currently unnamed), the Typhoon Linda and the Mollie Newton (we replaced the hull with a new Hudson hull due to damage to the first so it was re-christened). We hope to see more of you soon!

Next weekend, the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga! One of the largest regattas in the country. Come cheer us on!

10.28.05 - Thanks to the invention of photo galleries on facebook... we now have more pictures from the Head of the Charles.

More Head of the Charles photos are up thanks to Beth & Laura.

10.25.05 - I am looking for stories or recaps written by team members, alumni, family & friends to post on this website. It's about time for something more engaging rather than just news. Perhaps some of the current rowers, brand new novice, or old timers have a story that they are just dying to share. Or maybe just a great day you want to revisit time and time again and have others share your memory? (The Head of the Charles is a great starting point!) Check out the history page for some ideas. I'll start posting some excerpts that I already have in the next day or two. So, send me something!

10.24.05 - RESULTS and some PICTURES are now up. Next weekend there is no regatta for GT, but there is the Alumni picnic for alumni, friends & family on October 30th at 2:30pm. We hope to see you there. The following weekend is the Head of the Hooch at its new location in Chattanooga. Have a Happy Halloween!

09.28.05 - As we all know, the Head of the Hooch has moved from Lake Lanier to Chattanooga. Therefore, anyone coming to watch the regatta (like your parents), may need to stay in a hotel. Well, St. Andrew Rowing Club is offering a great deal as a raffle and want to share it with as many people as possible.

Head of the Hooch Hotel Romance Opportunity
If you have the chance to row past St. Andrew's boathouse area, you may have noticed the recent improvements to the dock and the transformation of the Erg Shack into an Ergasium. In an effort to subsidize the cost of these improvements and celebrate the "new" Hooch, St. Andrew Rowing Club is sponsoring a raffle that you may have an interest in.

The Grand Prize winner will be treated to luxurious hotel accommodations, complete with romance, at The Chattanoogan Hotel ($185 value). The Chattanoogan Romance Package includes:

Second Prize is a luxurious hotel room without all the romance.

It's only $10 to enter! See the flyer.

Thank you in advance for your support of our raffle as the St. Andrew Rowing Club athletes and parents are looking forward to participating in the "new" Hooch.

09.22.05 - I asked Jordan Smith, (GT Crew Alumni - '03 and recent representative for the USA at the 2005 World Championships in Japan in the coxed pair), to tell us about his experience.

First, he was unsure of what he'd have to offer. He didn't see himself as a hero, just a guy who had a goal and worked for it - like anyone else would have. Was that really inspiring? Well, I told him it was. And that Georgia Tech Crew would benefit from learning about his experience. So... here's what he had to say.

I think it was Liz that first told me I could be on the national team; it was up to me if I wanted to.  It is a choice.  Not a light one.  It's full of sacrifice, on behalf of your parents, your wife, people you haven't even met yet and least of all you.  I knew nothing about the sport when I joined.  I just did what Ethan or Rob said.  Aside from a few genetic gifts (less than you think) it's a matter of determination, will power and hard work.

I didn't know enough to even be intimidated; I sucked so much the first spring, I raced to not screw up (thus my habit of racing with my head down in full concentration.)  I still remember the first day of that first spring Rob stopped yelling at me and took after Tierson… second happiest day of my life.

I worked hard, we all did.  I didn't know much but I knew I did not want to be that guy who always got a seat because he had an erg.  Sure it's not fair to the other guy who is left out, but it's a personal hell to not know if you are legitimate too.  I'd rather lose a seat in a race than be given one without proof, your teammates deserve that in crunch time and you need it to believe in yourself after a bad loss.

Tech Crew was the ideal for me.  Rob put us through hell on the water.  He would tell you if you weren't pulling your weight, even if there was no one else to take your place.  Rob would never tell us to do more work on our own, it was up to us to decide how we felt it necessary to earn out seats off the water.  If you thought you didn't need any extra work that was your call, but the team had ways to weed you out of the mix.  We were viscous in that sense.  No one cared about talent near as much as work ethic.  We wanted to win, to prove we were good.  We'd cut our best friend loose if he wasn't getting it done.

It was a business of winning.  I could walk into SAC [CRC] and find Wes or Mucha there any time.  Bob and Bart did a 100k day just to win winter points from the girls.  Erik Keop slept with his heart rate monitor on.  Steigerwalt got injured and did all his workouts on the exercycle.  Jim rowed with mono and sucked 25 pounds.  Craig had veins showing on his stomach to cox for us.  None of it was smart, per say.  It started as competition to see who would be top dog, and it wasn't necessarily friendly, but eventually we realized we couldn't win Vails that way.

There was urgency. We started every fall with "its nine months till Vails" and my response was always the same, "shit, that's not a lot of time".  I never came back out of shape because I never stopped working out.  Its no feather in my cap, its personal.  Who can stand to sit still when your goal is out there and someone else is working towards it.  Its not the motivation for medals, maybe once it was, its just a drive to know there is another level to be hit.

I immersed myself in that atmosphere, doing extra workouts with boat mates, learning from my older teammates, reading, teaching myself.  You name it, rowing was crack.  Its not just pulling hard, we taught each other different forms of SS, lifting with different muscles, even different forms of techno that helped pass the mind numbingly slow passage of SS time.  Thanks Wes.

As cheesy as it sounds I try to take each practice with that immersion.  Its true, to be the best at any level takes that dedication, and the results are the same if you don't do it.  One practice at a time, you might not make it to the next one. It's so worth the 5:30 blood sweat and tears when you get handed your first US uni, but it's even better when you put it on and complain about how it fits because it's going to hamper your race!  That's the mindset you have to have.  You get to a worlds regatta and everyone is as tall as you, there are even women taller than you.  You watch them pull lower splits than you... how the hell can you ever compete?  The same way you always do, one stroke at a time pushing the envelope.

So let's sum up:

You have a goal you can't stand someone else getting to before you...
PLAN

You pour all of yourself into the workouts of a season, keep searching for the next level, push the envelope, set goals and beat them: blood, sweat, drama (that is always there), developing trust in your teammates and learning from them... sacrificing…
PREPARE

You bitch when your uni doesn't fit right and will hamper you going to the start "uni down"

09.09.05 - Georgia Tech Crew made history this year by getting FOUR boats into the Head of the Charles. Never has this team received so many entries to the biggest regatta in the country!

The team will be sending a Women's Club 8+, a Women's Collegiate 8+, a Men's Collegiate 8+ and a Men's Lightweight 8+. Because of a 7th place finish last year in the Men's Collegiate 8+, that entry was automatic as they placed in the top 5%. We look forward to seeing them do it again this year!

As said before, there will be a strong Tech presence at the Head of the Charles this year, with at least 3 other boats containing GT Crew alumni. Joshua Vose ('01) in the Champ Single, Justin Steigerwalt ('03) in the Lightweight Single, and an ARC boat with 4 GT Alumni in the Lightweight 4+. (Beth Burnham Goldstein ('05), Anne-Marie Richards ('04), Shelly Holdren ('97) & Cassi Niemann ('01)). And we couldn't forget our very own head coach, Rob Canavan, in the Men's Senior Master Singles event.

Georgia Tech is very excited about this year's Head of the Charles and hopes you will be there to cheer us on!

09.09.05 - Previous news have been archived.

It's not too late to join the team. Fill out the JOIN form on this website and we'll get in contact with you!

There is a new president of GT Crew - our Women's VP, Kristie Ludvigsen. We are excited about our new leadership! Let's get the year started!

Be sure to check out the calendar of regattas for this season. (Keep in mind, though, it is subject to change.) Let the vice presidents know if you are able to house rowers in certain cities or if your parents can provide food at the regatta!

WELCOME Coach Ross Beattie. Our new Novice Women's Coach.
