Men’s Varsity Ltwt 8+ dominates at John Hunter Regatta in Oakridge, TN. |
Early in this spring season GT rowing attended the Knecht Cup Regatta on the Cooper River. The team performed well, winning three medals over all. The Open 4+ prevailed after a close final in which they were able to overtake a fast Colgate boat. Both lightweight boats took silvers; the Ltwt 4+ lost a very close race to Boston College by only one second, while the Ltwt 8+ fell to St. Joseph’s by three seconds. After this successful meeting with northerners, Georgia Tech returned home and began training for their next clash above the Mason-Dixon Line.
Early victories in a variety of southern regattas served as excellent motivation for the team as it entered the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta in Oakridge, TN. All four varsity men’s boats entered the finals in their races. The team implemented its race plans perfectly and won three gold medals in the Open 4+, Ltwt 4+, and Ltwt 8+. Georgia Tech Women’s rowers organized great races after splitting into smaller boats earlier in the season. GT rowing will definitely be strong for Dad Vails in 2006, but what about later years?

Men’s Varsity Ltwt 4+ celebrates at SIRA. The team will look to retain the James Lynch Dad Vail trophy won by the Georgia Tech Ltwt 4+ last year. |
Amazingly, Georgia Tech has had great success with a very young team. All four Varsity Men’s boats are predominately comprised of sophomores, with only three graduating seniors in the mix. The lightweight four that finished right behind Boston College at Knecht is made up of three sophomores and a freshman. The boat has gained significant speed since the trip to Cooper River and is looking forward to a rematch at Vails. In the lightweight eight, two rowers will graduate this spring. Of the remaining 8, three are juniors and four sophomores. The women’s varsity squad is similar in age distribution. Both the women’s lightweight 4 and pair consist entirely of sophomores.
This young team will surely grow faster in these next coming years. Such great increases in speed are made possible by are great coaching staff as well as countless hours on the water. “Our success this year with such a young crew is not a shock, but it is a pleasant surprise” says Head Coach Rob Canavan. Coach Canavan along with the entire Georgia Tech team is looking forward to Dad Vails, “We’ve geared our whole season to Dad Vails…it’ll be good to be back in Philly.” The trip to Philadelphia is like returning home for Coach Canavan, he rowed for Temple University early in his rowing career.
