There were a surprisingly large group of alumni - especially those from out of town - that stopped in to say hi to all their old friends and the new rowers on the team. Here's a picture of some of the alumni from that day!

11.12.06 - Georgia Tech wins Head of the South points trophy

Georgia Tech Crew won the collegiate overall points trophy Saturday at the 10th Annual Head of the South Regatta, beating out Jacksonville University and Virginia Tech on an unseasonably warm day that reached into the low 80s.

Tech's varsity men won the Championship 8 event with a time of 17:49.6, well ahead of second-place Jacksonville University, which finished the 5,000 meter upstream course in 18:14. Tech's second entry in the Champ 8 — a lightweight crew that took second in its own event earlier in the day — finished third with a time of 18:53.

With the Champ 8 win, Tech's top men's boat completed a sweep of its Southern head race season. The Tech varsity crew, which is stroked by Austin Nichols, also won at the Head of the Chattanooga and the Head of the Hooch earlier this fall, and finished fourth at Head of the Charles.

In addition to the eights at Head of the South, Tech found success in small boats. GT men swept the medals in the pair event, taking each of the top three places. Despite two buoy penalties, the Women's Club 4+ won a bronze.

Tech's head coach Rob Canavan commented: “I am very proud of the accomplishments achieved this season! Some highlights are a new collegiate record set at the Hooch in the Mens varsity 8. It is always nice to win a point trophy as we did at the Head of the South. It shows the depth of the team. Intersquad competition drives this team forward. Hopefully it results in a successful season.”

The Head of the South was hosted by Augusta Rowing Club and held on the Savannah River, which serves as the border between Georgia and South Carolina.

The event was also successful for St. Andrews Rowing Club, which shares a boathouse with Tech — SA took home the overall points award at the high school level.

Congratulations to the GT Crew Men's 4-!! They just placed third in the grand final behind Harvard and Wisconsin by out racing big shot schools like Lehigh, Stanford and Navy! Congratulations Austin Nichols, Shane Bechler, John Kapteyn and Cameron Troxel.

Also competing at this year's IRA was a Men's 2- with Hunter Driedame and Sean McLesky. After moving through the heats and reps, they ended up getting 5th in the 3rd level final. (see official results here)

05.16.06 - Georgia Tech Rowing Team left Philadelphia, PA Sunday after one of its most successful showing at the Dad Vail Regatta.

A victory in the Men’s Varsity Lightweight 8+ and a second place finish in the Men’s Varsity Open 4+ as well as a young Men’s Varsity Lightweight 4+ racing into the semi-finals pleased Tech Crew.

This year’s success in the Ltwt 8+ marks the first Georgia Tech varsity eight to ever win gold at Vails.  The triumph came after an amazing season with only one defeat in the event; the early loss to St Joe’s at Knecht Cup was vindicated as the Yellow Jackets beat the same boat at Vails in a decisive victory.  After a long rain delay, the lightweight eight focused on the race at hand and rowed its fastest sprint race of the season.  Each call by the coxswain, Theresa Mara, was answered and the boat surged forward gaining speed consistently throughout the race.  The tech lightweights finished 2.6 seconds ahead of St. Joes.

1 The Open 4+’s second place finish came in the last 300 meters of the race as a fast Cal boat arrived seemingly from nowhere.  Nevertheless, the crew is happy with a silver medal, “We expected more, it wasn’t really what I wanted, but somebody has to win silver and I’ll take it” said Austin Nichols, a third year Tech rower.  Three of the four will return next year, two of which will be training in Philadelphia this summer.
GT Open 4+ at the finish.

Currently, the team is organizing its trip to the IRA Regatta this June.  Georgia Tech attended with only one boat last year and hopes to race the Lightweight 8+ this year along with an Open 4+ or Pair.  Intense training will continue in anticipation of the team’s trip to Camden.  Overall the team is very young and will return a large majority of rowers next fall.  Success this season is only the beginning of a very long streak of Georgia Tech Rowing achievement.
